Cartographies de l’Invisible #3 belongs to the early stages of research within the series.

Here, the surface is still entirely contained within the frame. Continuities are constructed within the weaving itself, through variations in materials, densities and colours that run across the composition.

Wools, cottons, flax and silk retain their differences in texture and behaviour while participating in the same structure. Certain lines continue, are interrupted, then reappear elsewhere across the surface.

This work precedes the moment when, in later pieces, threads begin to physically cross the boundaries of the frame and enter into space.

Cottons
Organic cotton grown in Asia and spun in France by one of the country’s last remaining spinning mills, EPV-certified · Recycled cotton — Poland; processed without water or chemicals

Flax
Unbleached linen yarn · Linen fabric — grown and processed in France

Wools
Mérinos d’Arles — Bouches-du-Rhône

Silks
Recycled silk from saris, hand-spun in India

Materials may be used in different states — raw, carded, spun, plied, felted or woven — according to their properties and what they make possible within the work.

colours / dyes

Avocado · Coffee · Madder · Pomegranate · Onion · Indigo persicaria · Tea

The dyes are made from plants, fungi, soils and other gathered, recycled or cultivated materials, without commercially produced mineral or metal mordants. Dye baths are used to exhaustion, and residues are composted whenever their nature allows it.
